Qikfinger Films, a Kansas City production company with genre films streaming on Amazon and multiple platforms, known for its cult following, just announced its newest production, Bunny’s Last Xmas, a dark comedy twist on Hallmark Holiday movies. Shooting this winter in KC the film will feature a KC cast and crew starring regional favorites Gary Neal Johnson, Scott Cordes, Nicole Hall, and Jennifer Mays among others. Written and directed by Andrew Pritzker, Bunny’s Last Xmas, Qikfinger Films, long a proponent of indie filmmaking, aims to participate Missouri’s recently approved film tax credit by producing and hiring in state.
Punchline: You’ve directed sci-fi, thrillers, so why a holiday film?
Andrew Pritzker: “It’s warm. It’s fun. Big colorful lights, trees, garland… It brings families together…even families that don’t want to be together still get together at Christmas. There’s always love, anxiety, and disfunction. Between expectations and reality there’s comedy.
Punchline: You mentioned Hallmark movies. People seem to like them.
Andrew Pritzker: We like them too. We love what Hallmark does. The films are kitschy and warmhearted. They’ve become their own genre. So we thought we’d have a little fun.
Punchline: What’s it about?
Andrew Pritzker: Want the elevator pitch? An aged, over bearing family matriarch crashes her family’s annual holiday party proclaiming it’s her last Christmas.
Punchline: And it’s set in KC? So why Kansas City?
Andrew Pritzker: Besides living here and saving money? Look, KC is a Christmas town with a big small town feel, Plaza lights, tradition, family reunions, pop up events, carriage rides. Besides it’s Christmas glow, KC’s a movie town, always will be, now more than ever.
Punchline: How’s that?
Andrew Pritzker: Besides a film tax credit, KC has production infrastructure, talent, cast and crew. It’s one the better hubs for indie films. We’ve put together incredible casts and crews for films that play around the world. Big Hollywood Studios are still a thing but film happens everywhere… especially here.
Punchline: Is there a downside to shooting in KC?
Andrew Pritzker: Winter! Winter’s very cold. Fall, spring, summer, all great times to film here but we’re shooting interiors so it’ll be like shooting on a soundstage…fingers crossed.
Punchline: Did you consider filming anywhere else?
Andrew Pritzker: Oh yeah. We did our homework. Filmmaking is a business and you have to consider options. Our last film, HomePlanet, went coast to coast on a festival run. We met a lot of film commissioners. Got lots of offers, Brooklyn, New Hope, Chicago, Philly but none of them could match KC for an Xmas movie…Bunny’s Last Xmas.
Punchline: What not just say, “Christmas?”
Andrew Pritzker: Because Xmas is funnier.
